Listening with thoughtful attention is a cornerstone of good communication. Ask the group, “What makes a good listener?” List the answers. Also point out following behaviors that are barriers to good listening:
• Distracting (attending to something other than the speaker)
• Interrupting (making non-relative conversation or cutting in)
• Staring off (non-verbal expressions of disinterest)
The goal of successful communication is to achieve “shared meaning,” that is to make sure the message the sender is sending
is as close as possible to the message the receiver is getting. To do this, the communicator must understand the factors
(physical, cultural and environmental) that influence the sender and receiver; choose an appropriate medium; speak a language understandable to the receiver (that is appropriately encode the message); await decoding and receive feedback. The sender must then compare the feedback with the message that was meant to be sent to determine if shared meaning has been achieved.
