ACTIVITY
Ask participants to pair up. One person will be the sender and one the receiver.
The sender should tell the receiver about his or her plans for the upcoming weekend, a movie or book he or she enjoyed, or other general conversation topic. As the sender sends the message, the receiver is to actively listen, avoiding distraction, interruption and disinterest.
When the sender has finished his or her story, the receiver should mirror back the message such as, “So, you’ll be visiting your in- laws this weekend and will be having a barbeque at their house Saturday night.” If any part of the message was unclear, this is the time for clarification. If the receiver is unsure of the message, he or she can ask questions and if the receiver has misunderstood the message, the sender can clarify.
Ask participants to then switch roles and repeat the exercise. When both sides have had a chance, bring the group back together and ask for volunteers to share how they felt about the experience and what they noted.
