Competition
Competition naturally occurs when there
are teams or equal entities like households involved. Referring to a hoedown held in another household, one household coordinator asked another, “Can our household do that too?”
“Of course, silly,” came the reply. “Our household doesn’t have a trademark on it.”
The exchange gives a glimpse into the feelings of competition or insecurity that may set in.
As we adopt new culture, everybody wants to do it well. It is important to channel feelings of competition away from hostility and toward pushing and helping each other to do better. Remember, it is not about trying to out do another household, but doing what is right for your household.
Sharing and Celebrating Accomplishments
Since competition is quite normal, wise leadership will create avenues for sharing among households and for celebrating each other’s accomplishments. This must be part of the new culture. Community meetings with staff, householders and visitors can be a perfect venue for sharing and celebration – as can household management meetings on a smaller scale.
