Bringing Community Events to the Household
Involve householders in the community at large even when you can’t actually go to a community-wide event. For example, there
are annual pig races in New York Mills, a neighboring community to the little town of Perham. At Perham Memorial, staff in one household brought pig races to the residents. They raced stuffed animal pigs and gave prizes to the winners.
At Christmas, a nurse proposed the idea
for a “sleigh ride.” Staff and householders donned sleigh bells and walked through each household, singing carols. They even caroled through the hospital and stopped to sing “What Child Is This?” in the presence of a newborn. It was very moving for staff, householders and the baby’s family.
