Holidays (cont’d)
Holiday Caution
When there is a long “to do” list (like decorating Christmas trees or making May Day baskets) to prepare for a holiday, it
is very easy to fall back to an institutional practice of having staff or more likely volunteers do it. Even in households it is easy to be overwhelmed and tempted to lean on volunteers to get it all done. We caution you about this. Of course the offer of help is nice, but do you have volunteers come into your home and decorate? Volunteers may be helpful, but make sure it is the householders who are directing the decorating.
Another caution: It is your home and it is
you the householders – not people who work
in your home – who together should decide how to decorate it. What is normal holiday decorating for you? At home, did you put
little plastic cling-on pictures on your windows or tack cutouts onto a bulletin board? This concept applies to everything pertaining to holidays – and meals too, deciding what will
be served and who will prepare it. What wonderful questions for prompting discussions about holidays in your home.
