Themes
Certainly, holidays present themes, but there also are many non-holiday themes. There are infinite possibilities for enjoyable things you can do with themes, and planning them is half the fun! Think of the food, special activities, games, history/trivia, movies, armchair travel, recorded music, live musical entertainment and more that can flow from a theme.
Take APPLES as a theme.
Food: apple cake, apple dumplings, apple pie, apple butter, applesauce.
Special Activities: drying apples, pressing apples for cider.
Games: bobbing for apples, decorating or painting apples, painting or stamping with apple slices.
History/trivia: all about apples.
Music: “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree with Anyone Else but Me.”
Movies: “The Apple Dumpling Gang.” Armchair travel: Videos on apple-growing communities and apple harvesting.
Live Entertainment: Invite musicians and ask them to play apple songs. Also, an Oktoberfest event could be compatible with many of these apple themes.
Include residents, family members, staff and visitors. Announce upcoming themes and then plan and enjoy them together. Think of the fun people have making and wearing costumes at Halloween – it’s much the same.
