Create a Vibrant Family Council
If you have a Family Council, it will obviously take on the personality
and needs of the individual family members involved. Sometimes Family Councils resemble a support group
or an educational forum. Build upon the goals of the Household Model by seeking to incorporate families in every aspect of the home-making decisions and leading activities, suggesting anything from meals to menus to outing destinations.
Many family members do not realize they can use the kitchen any time they wish. Don’t let this happen. And do they know they can do their relative resident’s laundry while visiting instead of lugging it home and back again? What can we do to make it increasingly comfortable for each family member? Ask them. Ask these questions all the time, whether you have a council or not. If you build
up the meetings to allow input into decisions regarding operation of the home and creation of a vibrant home life, it may increase participation in the family council.
Another proactive idea gleaned from former Clear Creek Administrator, Beth Irtz, is to give the family council a greater voice on quality assurance by seeking their input or having
a representative serve on the QA committee. She taught us that “Family members care just as much about your home as you do!”
