Learning Circles
Some residents feel the term “learning circle” is too formal, perhaps believing it implies an obligation to teach or learn something. The Prairie Knoll Household at Perham Memorial morphed their learning circles into chats that feel more like visiting at home, conversations rather than tasks with rules to follow. Speaking out of turn is allowed, as residents don’t always remember a comment they wish to make if they wait until everyone around the circle has
a chance to speak. Householders are simply asked, “What do you think?”
On the other hand, learning circles have become so commonplace at Colorow Care Center in Olathe, CO, that staff will ask for an “emergency learning circle” when something urgent needs to be discussed.
