and in real life was to demonstrate an understanding of how each law would
apply in practical situations. Proof of the pudding, the parrot-fashion students
usually appeared lower down the results league table failing to fully grasp
how each law could be applied.
Role-play practical scenarios were initially nerve wracking but became fun
once each of us had embarrassed themselves sufficiently so that we all felt
we were ‘in it together’.

And now for something completely different . . . .
Drill or marching was considered an important part of our training. Every
morning after breakfast, we had to parade on the drill square and be taught
how to march as a group properly, with band music and in formation!
The first morning on the drill square, I thought my boots looked pretty good Page45
and I’d ironed my trousers and tunic, so I was pleased with my efforts.
