The real-life experiences and incidents described in this book occurred in he
1980’s. Whilst much has changed the thread of the job remains the same. The
workload differs considerably now, with mental health issues forming an
increasing part of role, reducing the time and resources that were previously
applied to the prevention and detection of crime. There is a body of
argument that this has diluted the efficiency of the police as crime solvers
and crook-catchers. Whilst there is some truth in this argument, the protection
of life and property remains a top priority for all officers.
Whether the changes that have redefined the role of the police have
delivered a more effective service is questionable. ‘Res Ipsa Loquitur’ is a
Latin legal expression which translates to “The Facts Speak For Themselves”.
Some of those facts will appear on the pages that follow so the reader,
combined with their own experiences, may arrive at their own conclusions.
