The concept of “consciousness” that materialists cannot explain

Who is it who ob serves and en joys a bright ly col ored flow er gar den in a dark en ed space with no ne-

ed of the eye, ret i na, lens or op ti cal nerves?
Who is the en ti ty that rec og niz es in elec tri cal sig nals the voi ces of its friends with out the need for
an ear, who rec og niz es them and re joic es to hear them?
Who is it who smells the scent of cake in the bak ery, and takes pleas ure from this?

Who is it who de lights in see ing a flow er, who feels af fec tion when he sees a kit ten, who strokes its
fur with no need for any arm, fin ger or mus cle?
Can a piece of tis sue con sist ing of nerve cells and weigh ing just a few hun dred grams be the cause
of the lives we lead, our sor rows, joys, friend ships, loy al ty, hon esty and ex cite ment?

If the en ti ty that per ceives all these thing s is not the brain, then who is it?
Is it a “lit tle man” in side our brains who per ceives the ex ter nal world?
Or the “ob serv er” to which quan tum phys ics re fers?
Is this ob serv er some where in side the brain?

If not, then where is it?
Fred Alan Wolf pro vides this an swer:

We know what an ob serv er does from a point of view of quan tum phys ics. But we don’t know who or what
the ob serv er ac tu al ly is. It doesn’t mean we ha ven’t tried to find an an swer. We’ve looked. We’ve gone in side
of your head. We’ve gone in to ev ery or i fice you have to find some thing called an ob serv er. And there’s no -

body home. There’s no body in the brain. There’s no body in the cor ti cal re gions of the brain. There’s no body
in the sub cor ti cal re gions or the lim bic re gions of the brain. There’s no body there called an ob serv er. And yet,
we all have this ex pe ri ence of be ing some thing called an ob serv er, ob serv ing the world out there. 97

Scientists now re al ize that the brain is not the source of per cep tions, and that it mere ly serves as a ve -
hi cle. Furthermore, sci en tists have en tire ly aban doned the idea that pre vailed cen tu ries ago of the “lit tle

man in side the brain.” Scientists have clear ly seen that the en ti ty they re fer to as the “ob serv er” is en tire -
ly in de pend ent of the brain. They now know that the source of per cep tions is human con scious ness.
In his book Closer to Truth: Challenging Current Belief, Robert Lawrence Kuhn of fers this de scrip tion:

Within the brain, where do the external world and the features
that make human beings human reside? Can neurons consisting
of accumulations of blind, unconscious atoms be the source of
                                   such a sublime consciousness?

Of course not! Its origin lies solely in the human soul.
