However, these peo ple—all of them sci en tists—in ter est ing ly ig nored that 99% of mu ta tions are harm ful
or even fa tal to the or gan isms, while the oth er 1% have no ef fect at all. Even un der con trolled lab o ra to ry
con di tions, it was im pos si ble to be stow new ge net ic in for ma tion on organisms by way of mu ta tions, much
less to turn them in to more ad vanced life forms. On the con tra ry,
ev ery mu ta tion ei ther de formed an organism or led to its death. It
thus be came ob vi ous what kind of ef fect mu ta tions would have in
an un con trolled nat u ral en vi ron ment.
The con clu sions re vealed by pa le on tol o gy and the facts dem on -
strat ed by ge net ics forced ev o lu tion ists to make con stant new ad -
just ments to their the o ries. Once ge net ics elim i nat ed the pos si bil i ty
of evolution by means of nat u ral se lec tion, they put their hopes on
mu ta tions. And as pa le on tol o gy re vealed the truth about the fos sil
record, they re sort ed to the con cept of “punc tu at ed equilibrium.”
All the un de ni a ble ev i dence against ev o lu tion re vealed by sci ence
left the the o ry of ev o lu tion with no ex pla na tions to of fer and left it
to tal ly bank rupt. The new mod i fi ca tions made to the the o ry nev er
led to the re sults ev o lu tion ists had hoped for, not a sin gle piece of
ev i dence sup ports ev o lu tion.
Every claim made by the the o ry was dis cred it ed. All the
claims made by ev o lu tion ists were sci en tif i cal ly re fut ed. Yet ev -
o lu tion ists knew that one sub ject in par tic u lar de mol ished all
their claims right from the out set, and they open ly ad mit ted it.
This was “con scious ness,” which Alfred Wallace de scribed as be -
ing im pos si ble to have de vel oped by way of ev o lu tion, even as
he pro posed that very the o ry.
