Pleasant Words from the Gospel
But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judg-
ment. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disci-
plined so that we will not be condemned with the world. (1
Corinthians, 11:31-32)
Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by
grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring...
Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many
nations, just as it had been said to him, [the promise of God]
"So shall your offspring be." Without weakening in his faith,
he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he
was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah's womb was
also dead. (Romans, 4:16-19)
For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, be-
cause we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with
our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swal-
lowed up by life. Now it is God Who has made us for this very
purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing
what is to come. Therefore we are always confident... We live
by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians, 5:4-7)
Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,
when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of
suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and
persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those
who were so treated. You sympathized with those in prison
and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, be-
cause you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting pos-
sessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be
richly rewarded. (Hebrews, 10:32-35)
