They Approach Believers out of
Self-Interest
In the very same way, these dreamers... they have rushed for
profit into Balaam's error... These men are blemishes at your
love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—
shepherds who feed only themselves... These men are grum-
blers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they
boast about themselves and flatter others for their own ad-
vantage. (Jude, 1:8, 11-12, 16)
... They are... reveling in their pleasures while they feast with
you. With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they
seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed
brood! (2 Peter, 2:13-14)
They Abandon Believers When There
is Nothing to Gain from Them
... Now many antichrists have come... They went out from us,
but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged
to us, they would have remained with us; but their going
showed that none of them belonged to us. (1 John, 2:18-19)
They are Unwise
... Yet these men... what things they do understand by instinct,
like unreasoning animals—these are the very things that de-
stroy them. (Jude, 1:8,10)
