The Miracles of our Prophet (saas)





                 such a great mir a cle and ac cused our Prophet (saas) of be -
                 witch ing them. After they saw the Moon split with their own
                 eyes, they should have re al ized that he was a true proph et. But
                 be cause of their ar ro gance, de sires, and pas sions, they did not
                 ac cept the Qur'an. This at ti tude is com mon among all un be liev -
                 ers. No mat ter what mir a cle they wit ness, they say:

                     Our eye sight is be fud dled! Or, rath er, we have been put un -
                     der a spell! (Surat al-Hijr: 15)
                     Bediuzzaman Said Nursi men tions the split ting of the
                 Moon in his The Letters. He re lates that many Companions wit -
                 nessed it and that the un be liev ers were ren dered to tal ly pow -
                 er less in the face of this event:

                     Among his great est mir a cles, a cer tain and mu ta wat ir one,
                 is the split ting of the Moon. This mir a cle was re lat ed through
                 var i ous chan nels, to the de gree of ta wa tur and by the fore most
                 Companions, among them Ibn Mas`ud, Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar,
                 Ali, Anas, and Hudhayfa (ra). Moreover, Allah stated in the
                 Qur'an this su preme mir a cle to the whole world: "The Hour
                 has drawn near and the Moon has split." (Surat al-Qamar: 1).
                     Even the stub born un be liev ers could not de ny this verse; all they
                     could say was: "It is mag ic!" Thus, even the un be liev ers were cer -
                     tain that it had oc curred.  30

                     Bediuzzaman says that one of rea sons be hind our
                 Prophet's (saas) mir a cles was to ex pose the dif fer ence be tween
                 a ty rant like Abu Jahl and a good man like Abu Bakr. In his The
                 Letters, he says:

                     Miracles take place in or der to prove the claim of pro pheth ood and
                     to con vince de niers, but not to force them to be lieve. This mir a cle
                     was need ed to con vince those who had al ready heard of the pro -
                     pheth ood of Muhammad. To let it be seen from oth er parts of the
