This sto ry is in clud ed in the works of such great had ith
schol ars as Imam al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, Ahmad ibn
Hanbal, Abu Dawud, al-Hakim, al-Bayhaqi, and Abu
Nu`aym. Some of these had iths are as fol lows:
25
Abdullah ibn Mas`ud (said): We were with the Messenger
of Allah at Mina when the Moon was split in two. One part was
be hind the moun tain and the oth er one was on this side of the
moun tain. He said to us: "Bear wit ness to this." 26
Abdullah ibn Mas`ud re port ed that the Moon was split in
two parts dur ing the Messenger of Allah's life time. The moun -
tain cov ered one of its parts and one part of it was above the
moun tain, and he said: "Bear wit ness to this." 27
During the life time of the Messenger of Allah, the Moon
was split in two; one part re mained over the moun tain, and the
oth er part went be yond the moun tain. On that, he said:
"Witness this mir a cle." 28
The had iths state that this mir a cle oc curred in Mecca. They
al so re late that the Meccans want ed him to per form this mir a -
cle:
The peo ple of Mecca asked the Messenger of Allah to
show them signs (mir a cles), and he showed them the split ting
of the Moon twice. 29
According to the sto ry, the Prophet Muhammad (saas) did
as they asked, but they con tin ued to de ny the truth of his mes -
sage and em brace Islam:
If they see a Sign they turn away, say ing: "There is no end
to this witch craft!" They have de nied the truth and fol -
lowed their whims and de sires. But ev ery thing has its time.
