Species of bacteria come in very different forms. Some prefer oxygen-rich environ-
ments, while other, so-called anerobic ones survive in oxygen-free ones. Some cre-
ate their own food by means of photosynthesis, while others obtain nutrients by
18 breaking down organic substances. Although bacteria consist of a single cell, their
metabolisms may exhibit considerable differences.
