7. Sighting a flare in the east:
A big flame will oc cur in the east for three or sev en days in a row, fol -
lowed by dark ness in the sky and a brand-new red ness un like the usu -
al col or of red spread ing over the sky. A proc la ma tion will be heard in
a lan guage earth can un der stand. (Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rasul
Barzanji, Al-Isha'ah li-Ashrat as-Sa'ah, p. 166.)
This is a hadith narrated by Abu Ja'far b. Muhammad b. Ali (ra):
"When you see a flame rise in the east for three or seven days, then
wait for the emergence of Al-i Muhammad; Allah will proclaim from
the sky uttering the name of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) and everybody,
whether in the east or the west, will hear that voice." (Al-Muttaqi al-
Hindi, Al-Burhan fi 'Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir az-Zaman, p. 32.)
"I swear that a flame will en gulf you. That flame is pres ent ly in an ex -
tin guished state at the val ley called Berehut. That flame swal lows up
peo ple with ter ri ble pain in side it, burns down and de stroys peo ple and
prop er ty, and spreads all over the world by fly ing like a cloud with the
as sist ance of winds. Its heat at night is much high er than its day time
tem per a ture. By go ing as deep as the cen ter of earth from above the
heads of peo ple, that flame be comes a ter ri ble noise, just like the light -
ning be tween the ground and the sky," he nar rat ed. (Mukhtasar Tazki-
rah al-Qurtubi, p. 461.)
Some peo ple wait for this flame as a sign that comes sud den ly and
for no par tic u lar rea son, that nev er goes out, and that ev ery one in the
world can see. Since the test in this world con tin ues dur ing the oc cur rence
of these signs, just be cause peo ple will see them does not mean that they
will un der stand them. Thus, peo ple will make their de ci sions by us ing
their in tel lects, minds, con scien ces, and will. The por tents con cern ing the
flame must be eval u at ed in this man ner.
