According to U.S. Geological Survey re ports, the num ber of earth -
quakes with a mag ni tude of 5.0 or great er on the Richter scale that took
place dur ing the 400 years be tween 1556-1975 was on ly 110; be tween
1980-2009, the num ber of earth quakes with a mag ni tude of 6.0 or great er

on the Richter scale was 4,176. These fig ures re veal that the num ber of
earth quakes had in creased by the be gin ning of the year Hijri 1400.
