site of this when it comes to the sub ject of the Mahdi.
Bediuzzaman devot ed hun dreds of pages to elu ci dat -
ing the com ing of the Mahdi, made the mat ter a pub lic
one, and open ly stat ed that it was not an issue that
need ed to be kept hid den. Indeed, the fact that the trea -
tis es have been read by mil lions over the years makes
it clear that the sub ject is one for pub lic con sump tion,
not a secret one.
However, although Bediuzzaman's view is crys tal
clear, some peo ple have sought to sup port this mis -
con cep tion by load ing var i ous false mean ings onto
Bediuzzaman's words. One state ment by Bediuzzaman
that has been mis in ter pret ed to that end is this:
My broth ers' sec ond error: they ascribe a mor tal iden -
ti ty that is prone to decay to that help less broth er who
rep re sents the spir it u al enti ty of the Disciples of Light
and who forms the van guard in the first duty in cer tain
respects. Although these two errors do no harm to the
true puri ty of the Treatise on Light nor even in any way
to its use in spir it u al and heav en ly spheres, they cause
polit i cal cir cles to fall into an unfound ed error and the
pub li ca tion of the Treatise of Light is harmed. Since this
time is one of a spir it u al enti ty, such great and eter nal
truths can not be built on mor tal, help less iden ti ties that
are lia ble to error. In con se quence, it is wrong to give
the name of that per son age who will come and per form
