                                109. Civil Wars and Conflicts

In the near future, there will be people who will
cause fitna and conflict. (Mukhtasar Tazkirah al-

                                      Qurtubi, p. 376, no. 685)
Doomsday will not come until a person kills his
brother. (Muhammad ibn `Abd ar-Rasul Barzanji,
                               Al-Isha`ah li Ashrat as-Sa'ah, p. 141)
Doomsday will not come until hearts hate one an-

other, ideas are divided, and brothers fall into con-
flict over religion. (Muhammad ibn `Abd ar-Rasul
                              Barzanji, Al-Isha`ah li Ashrat as-Sa`ah,

                                            pp. 142-43)

In Zaire, the civil war between the Hutus and the Tutsis is an example
of the conflicts that raged in the twentieth century. Colonel Joseph Mobutu,
who came to power in 1964, opened all of the country's natural resources
and diamond mines to West. Making no effort to encourage social devel-
opment, he amassed a huge fortune for himself and indulged in extrava-

gance. The conflicts that befell the Zairian people turned out to be a great
genocide, during which almost half a million people died.
Wars that raged among different tribes, that is, "fanatical rage," caused
brutal events in many other countries as well. In the Qur'an, God calls at-
tention to "fanatical rage," a feeling of rage and hatred unique to those peo-
ple who are ignorant of the religion's morality, as follows:

                                                6
