PLAN YOUR
PLAN YOUR
UNPLANNED WORK REQUESTS
Take a moment to think it through – How important is the
work to them?
It’s so easy to get additional work requests from others, and
many of us often answer with a yes to take on the work, before
taking a moment to think and access if we have the capacity to
take it on.
When we begin to take responsibility for our time and planning
our week, we will be better equipped to know how much time
we have to invest either at a whim or if the work is important,
how best we can plan it into our week. People often value
knowing whether you can get the work done and when, than
taking the work on and not being able to deliver as promised.
Planning your week, does not mean that it is set in stone. You
created the plan, so there is always room for flexibility. Family is
always important, therefore we need to plan in family time, as
well as be able to be flexible for urgent family matters.
Planning your time will keep you enlightened as to your
schedule and will assist you in making a decision on whether or
not to take on unplanned work and if you decide to take on the
work, provide an upfront expectation of when the work will be
complete.
Some questions therefore that might help you in deciding to
take on work requests are:
If the work is coming from someone else, determine the
importance of the work.
Ask them:
Is this a required work request?
Do you understand exactly what is required to be
When do they require the work?
How important is this work?
