HOW MUCH INPUT IS REQUIRED?
We all love to impress, so another aspect of what we don’t
consider in taking on unplanned work, is how much of our input
does the task actually require?
Let me paint you a picture:
If we were asked to create a basic report to show how many
people visited our shop in the last month, and we have taken
the time to ask the necessary questions, therefore we
understand what is required. On this premise, we accept the
work, knowing that looking at our schedule, we are able to spare
the time, say 3 hours, required to do the research and put it
together in a word document. We also confirm when the work
will be ready.
But when we go to complete the project, we decide to put the
report in PowerPoint and make the PowerPoint presentation
very colourful and add additional information not required,
because we think that looks good. Because we have promised to
have the work ready by the given time, we push on to finish the
work, even though we have exceeded the time scheduled.
We have just cost ourselves time and created a deficit in our
time to complete the already scheduled work.
