is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face

The Stamford and Rutland Times shows a photograph of George
Mountney with the caption “ Lance Corporal G W Mountney,
Kings Cliffe, killed whilst attending to wounded.”
MUNFORD William
Private Leicestershire Regiment
William was born in 1885 in Blofield, Norfolk. His parents were
Frederick and Jane Munford.
In 1905 the marriage of William and Margaret Park is registered
at Wayland, Norfolk.
Their first son, John Frederick, is born in May 1907 and by the
1911 census the family is living at Hockham, Margaret’s birth
place, just west of Thetford. William is working as a horseman
on a farm. By the same date, William’s father, Frederick, his wife
and five children have moved to Great Casterton and Frederick
is working for the Burghley estate.
As the war progresses and casualties multiply there is a need
for facilities to allow wounded men to recuperate. In January
1916 the ministry requisitions several tracts of land to build
convalescent centres. One of these is the Thetford Command
Depot near Mundford. This is possibly the trigger for William to
move his family closer to that of his parents.
Certainly the birth of their next child, Sidney, is recorded in
Stamford in May 1917. If the family had been living in Kings Cliffe
at that date, the birth would have been registered in Oundle.
The present Munford family have a photograph of William in
army uniform with a Leicestershire Regiment cap badge. His
wife Margaret, John Frederick and baby Sidney, who appears
to be between one and two years old, are also in the picture.
The apparent age of Sidney and the lack of leaves on the trees
suggest that the photograph was taken in the winter of 1918.
William’s son John Frederick joins Kings Cliffe mixed school on
19th January 1920. He is 14 years old.
