1911 he moved away from the family and was living at 2a
Sherrard Street, Melton Mowbray, boarding with the Hallett
family and working as a chauffeur.
At some time he joined the army in the ASC and probably
followed his civilian trade as a driver.
His records have not survived, so no more is known about him
except that he survived and died in Leicester in 1940.
PESTELL Charles Ernest
Private 100227 Army Service Corps
Born early in 1886, Charles was the son of Charles and Amy
Jane Pestell.
Charles was a farm labourer from Southoe, Huntingdonshire
who had come to live in West Hay, Kings Cliffe. He had married
Amy Jane Moss in her home-town of Bradford and their first child
Ada was born there in 1878. The family returned to Charles’s
home, Southoe, for a short time, before moving to Kings Cliffe
in about 1880.
They had three more children at West Hay, Allan in 1881,
Charles Ernest in 1886 and Bertie in 1888.
About 1890, the family moved to Cross Leys in Thornhaugh,
just a few miles from West Hay where Florrie, their youngest
child, was born.
In the 1911 census, Charles (senior), Amy and Charles Ernest
have moved half way to Leicester, to Rotherby, where Charles
senior worked as a shepherd. By this time all the other children
have left home.
At some time early in the war (probably 1915) Charles Ernest
signs up to the army in Leicester. He had previously worked
as a traction engine driver and joined the Army Service Corps,
possibly also as a driver.
He left for France on 26th September 1915 but, as his records
did not survive the WW2 fire, nothing is know of his whereabouts
until he dies of wounds on 2nd April 1918.
The Germans, having been reinforced by soldiers from the,
now non-existent Eastern Front, had started a major Spring
