Battalion fought at the Hohenzollern Redoubt and incurred
huge numbers of casualties at Loos. As a result they were
taken out of the line to recuperate. They returned to the front
line in February 1916. Throughout the rest of the war they were
involved in many more actions, which often resulted in heavy
losses.
James was well respected by his commanding officer Lt Col G.
A. Trent who wrote –
“A very good clean soldier. Sober, honest, intelligent & trustworthy. Has
always worked well and given every satisfaction. Has been employed
as a cook for over a year. A very good all-round man.”
James survived the war and in 1918 married Florence Green.
They had four children -
Irene Muriel born 13th December 1926.
James William born 5th March 1929.
George born 16th May 1937.
Harry Edward born 9th February 1939.
He died in the village on 23rd May 1964 in West Street.

SCOTNEY Thomas James
Possibly Private 91359 Tank Corps
Born in 1886 in Kings Cliffe, Thomas was the son of Thomas and
Elizabeth Scotney who lived on West Street, Kings Cliffe. He was
the brother of Ernest.
There is only one Thomas J Scotney in the war medal cards.
SHARPE Alfred
Sapper 109296 Royal Engineers 17th Company
Sapper WR/252840 110th Railway Company Royal Engineers
Alfred Sharpe was born in 1873 to Henry and Catherine Sharpe who
lived on West Street, Kings Cliffe. Henry was one of Kings Cliffe’s
wood carvers and turners. After leaving school and, according to
the 1891 census, Alfred had taken up his father’s trade.
