know nothing of his time as a prisoner, but at the end of the
war he was repatriated on 31st December 1918.
He was given a medical examination on 15th April 1919 and
found to have VDH, a diseased heart valve, often the result
of rheumatic fever. He had giddiness and was very breathless.
This was all considered to have been brought on whilst a
prisoner. He was rated 80% disabled and considered unfit for
further service.
His home is quoted, in the examination documents, as
Blackmorethorne Cottage near Bulwick.
He returned to his parent’s house near Bulwick but died on 22nd
June 1917.
He is buried in Kings Cliffe Cemetery grave number 341.
Although his death was due to his period as a POW, he does
not feature in the list of “UK Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914
-1919.”

Charles was born in 1881 in Kings Cliffe and was the elder
brother of Arthur Sharpe. Their parents were William and
Elizabeth (nee Green) Sharpe.
In 1911 he was working as a farm labourer.
He was called up in early 1916 and went for his examination at
Peterborough. He was then 34 years old. He was deemed to be
unfit for regular service and was put into the Labour Corps of
the Northamptonshire Regiment.
There is no indication that he served overseas and he left the
army just before the war ended due to ill health.
