The Iditarod Race, The Underground
Railroad, survival in the Canadian
wilderness, World War II-Children of
the Holocaust. Even as I am retired, I am
still creating them.
Together with my daughter, we created
Women of The American Revolution. Of
Course, it is not possible to do all these
in one year.
Reading units can be made on any
subject that interests a child. If you are
homeschooling girls that like Cinderella
stories, there is a mountain of material
that can create a reading unit. For
instance, The Rough Face Girl by Rafe
Martin used in conjunction with the
play, The Hidden One, is a great chance
to compare and contrast genres and
do a character analysis. Add to that a
favorite of mine, The Way Meat Loves
Salt, by Nina Jaffe and they have to
think a little deeper.
Another Cinderella story that cannot help
but make you smile is, Frannie’s Dream,
by Caralyn Buehner. She actually tells her
fairy godmother “No, thank you.”
There are so many ways to bring
learning alive for children. We just
have to think with our hearts - the way
children do every day.
