Barnstaple to Exeter
[Return to the index for The West]
If you are not of a mind to venture further into Devon and Cornwall you can cut across
country to the South Devon Coast.
The suggested route, along the A377, is not what other sites may recommend. They’ll take you
further north east on the busy A361, but I prefer a meander through a region of woods, orchards
and farms. This is also the centre of the famous Devonshire cider industry and you can taste the
brew at the cidery or in the local pubs.
One thing about this trip . . . the navigation is dead easy. Take the A377 from Exeter all the way to
Barnstaple. Route 3 on the map.
Crediton
Sandford Orchards make a range of award winning Devon farmhouse ciders using apples from
local orchards. Some cider is matured in rum barrels for a year to become their Vintage Cider.
They also produce a cider called Old Kirton which is aged for 18 months in oak. The label for Old
Kirton reads “Picked by hand, pressed through straw, and aged in oak. This is the same cider from
the same orchards as has been drunk in these parts for centuries”. The shop is open Mon-Sat.
