Make your way to Leazes Rd, the A690 and head east.
0.0 mi 54.7791, -1.5645 At the large grassed r/bout at the i/s of Leazes Rd, Gilesgate and the
A690, take the 2nd exit to remain on the A690 s/posted “Sunderland A690 / A1(M)”.
1.8 mi 54.7943, -1.5293 At the r/bout take the 1st exit s/p “Gateshead / Newscastle /
A1(M)”. This will take you on to the A1 north.
Side trip to the Beamish Open Air Museum . . .
5.2 mi At Junction 63 take the exit s/p “Chester-le-Street A167 / Stanley A693”. Follow the brown
and white signs along the A693 to the museum. It’s 4.2 miles – about six minutes – to the
museum.

The Angel of the North has become one of the most talked
about pieces of public art ever produced. Rising 20 metres from
the earth near the A1 in Gateshead, the Angel dominates the
skyline, dwarfing all those who come to see it. Made from 200
tonnes of steel, it has a wingspan of 54 metres.
Remain on the A1(M) or A1 following signs to Newcastle and/or
Gateshead. You will skirt around the western side of Newcastle-
Upon-Tyne
