Paul and Working on Cars
“Used to be, I didn’t know nothing about working on cars. I used to call Paul and he would help
me. But then when he moved to Arkansas, I had to work out my problems by myself. So I got
to where most of the things I could do myself. One of the big things we did, we had an old
Plymouth Station wagon that needed the motor overhauled. I pulled it in the garage on Smith
Road and I borrowed a come‐along from work and pulled the engine and transmission both at
the same time, took the motor apart and took it in on the kitchen table and cleaned it all up,
put new rings in it. Put it back together and it ran. I never knew nothing about motors but we
got it to going. You learn by doing, that’s all I can say. If you have to, you have to.”
