Jefferson Davis Davison and Lucy Jane Carter
Robert Herndon Davison’s Parents
When Jefferson Davis Davison was born on February 9, 1865, in Barren County, Kentucky, his father, Herndon,
was 52 and his mother, Angeline, was 42. He married Lucy Jane Carter on December 19, 1889, in Louisville,
Kentucky. She was the daughter of William P. Carter and Martha Lucetta Stinnett.
They had four children in 11 years. Robert Herndon, (our line) was their first child, born in 1891, followed by
Louella in 1893, Ollie in 1895 and Grace Mae in 1902. He and Lucy continued with the family tradition of
farming on the same land that had been in the family for many generations. Jefferson died on July 25, 1911, of
Nephritis. He died at the age of 46 and was buried in the family graveyard.
After Jefferson died, an inventory and appraisal were made of his estate. The widow’s lot was set aside, but it
appears that Lucy did a little negotiating. The inventory states that “In lieu of 10 sheep, yarn and cloth
manufactured by the family loom, spinning wheel and cards, that the widow would take 1 dresser, a sofa,
graphaphone and reckord, table, two beds and furnishings, 1 carpet and matting, dishes and cooking utensils.”
With the help of her son Robert, Lucy continued farming for around another seventeen years. Sometime be‐
tween 1928 and 1930, the family left the country life and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Lucy and two of her
daughters, Grace and Louella lived together, never far from her son Robert and his family. Lucy died April 19,
1955 in Cincinnati, Ohio at age 89.
