CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
TESTING
• Monolithic waste forms produced using ImmoCem immobilise contamination for over 100 years (Arcadis)
• Granular leaching assessments such as BS EN 12457 are inappropriate for monolithic waste forms
• Particle size reduction of monolithic waste forms should be avoided
• Stabilised waste forms with a particle size of > 40mm in all directions should be regarded as monolithic
• Treatment efficacy for solidified waste forms should be demonstrated using semi-dynamic tank testing in
preference to granular leaching tests
• During treatment, monolithic waste forms should be tested for compliance using a truncated 4 day semi-
dynamic tank test as per the intended implementation of 2003/33/EC
PROCESS
• Minimising surface area to stabilised mass leads to improved treatment efficacy
• Site treatment processes should attempt to create a solidified monolithic product for long term disposal
• Excavation (monolith destruction) should be avoided wherever possible
• Preference should be given to mass stabilisation at the point of final deposition to avoid disruption of the
stabilised matrix and subsequent loss of treatment efficacy
• Consider the application of site specific assessments against regulatory compliance criteria
