‘Human eh?’ he asked with a hint of a sneer. The Redham tribe thought
they were superior to any other race other than themselves. And even
inside the city, constant fights were breaking out because their leader
rarely lasted a few months until he was assassinated by someone or other.
Gustav nodded.
‘Speak!’ roared Redham drawing his long - bladed dagger and slashed it
across the boy's face. Gustav recoiled a pace, stumbled, then fell painfully
onto a rock.
‘Feed him to the Cawagori,’ Redham growled. At the mention of this
incredibly dark beast, many of the force started cringing away from
Rhythm as if he was some incredibly evil being.
‘Hurry up!’ Redham’s voice cut them like a whip. They came to attention
at once and quickly they marched Gustav away into the ironstone
building, all except one.
Baruna knelt beside Arretez as they finished filling in the hole. Both had
their heads bowed in respect of their fallen friend. The attack on the
camp had been short and vicious. Taken by surprise, they had some
difficulty forcing the onrushing beasts back. Weak from hunger they
pressed on, waging war against these semi - human attackers. Slowly, they
retreated, unfamiliar with the semi - automatic rifles (not that they were
accustomed to any sort of gunpowder weapon). An arrow had caught
Darius in the chest and he had died in a hail of sword axes and arrows.
Gustav, who had been collecting wood at the time was ambushed and
chained. Arretez had tried to save his friend but to no avail, he had
already been dragged off. Arretez had then become so angry, he chased
after the bear-like creatures and sprayed them with lead. As the enemy
fled, he walked slowly back to the lean-to where they had made their
base, the anger slowly ebbing away.
‘Now we’re going to have to get him back,’ sighed Buruna.
