League Review
The newcomers in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South
began the 2023/24 campaign `unbeaten`.
Momentum after winning promotion can often lead to a good start to the
new season and Mousehole’s 4-0 win at Westbury United will be a
warning that they intend to emulate and even better what the likes of
Hamworthy United achieved in their first season at Step 4 level.
Tallan Mitchell gave the visitors a 33rd minute lead that Mark Goldsworthy
doubled 6 minutes after half-time.
And then Jack Bray-Evans and Paulo Sousa scored two more in the final 5
minutes.
Bemerton Heath Harlequins edged a 2-1 verdict at Tavistock AFC,
who also performed well overall in their first campaign at Step 4 level last
season.
Brendan Holmes on the half-hour mark and then Mu Jatta in the 72nd
minute had Harlequins in command, although Owen Pritchard’s goal in the
80th minute gave the visitors a bit of a nervy finale.
Cribbs held Frome Town to a goalless draw at Badger’s Hill in front of
346, while Malvern Town shared a 2-2 home draw with Bideford AFC,
whose Tyler Yendle scored an 80th minute equaliser after Jack Watts` brace
in the 32nd and 45th minutes, with Javan Wright sandwiching Biddy’s other
in the 38th minute, had given the Worcestershire side a 2-1 lead.
A good start too for one of the promotion fancies, Wimborne Town, who
won 5-2 at Kayte Lane against Bishops Cleeve.
Ross Langworthy’s brace, with Jez Bedford replying, had the Mitres 2-1 up
at half-time.
A penalty from Harry Baker began the Magpies response in the 75th
minute, with Jamie Johnston, Jack Lovell and Baker again all scoring within
13 minutes.
Melksham Town, another of the fancied sides, won 1-0 at Paulton
Rovers, thanks to a 3rd minute Alex Henshall effort.
Bashley, who are another expected to do well, had a crowd of 316 to see
them defeat Yate Town, relegated from the Premier Division South, 2-0 at
The GlenMex Stadium with goals from Brett Williams after 28 minutes and
Conor Whiteley on the hour-mark.
There were draws between Bristol Manor Farm and Larkhall Athletic
and Exmouth Town and Evesham United.
At The Creek, Lewis Graham broke the deadlock to give the Larks a 28th
minute lead they held until the 54th minute when Owen Brain levelled.
Archie Ferris looked to have won it for the visitors when he made it 2-1 in
the 76th minute – that after Larks` defender Even Mortimer-Tyler had been
sent-off for a dangerous challenge.
