What a season it has been for Abingdon United - League winners and County Cup finalists!
After going close to winning the Premier Division title in the Southern Region League
last season, United were determined to go one better and, in fact, were the first women’s
team in the country to be crowned Champions of their division this season, along with
Burnham United, and the first at Regional League level.
Abingdon United have a strong squad to select from, especially in goal where keepers
Hannah Cox and Sophie Kirby have kept no less than 13 clean sheets between them through
all the competitions this season.
The title and promotion to the National League was secured when goals from Megan
Crawford and Lindsay Pinker gave them a 2-0 victory against runners-up and main rivals,
Ascot United.
United have also done very well in Cup competitions this season, including reaching the
County Cup Final for the first time in the club’s history. They did this by beating National
League side Maidenhead United on penalties after one of the best games they played all
season - the determination and desire was there throughout the 90 minutes all the way up to
the penalties. At full time, it was 2-2 with goals from Lindsay Pinker and Lauren May, before
goalkeepr Hannah Cox won the Player of the Match for this game for her unbelievable saves
in the nervy shootout which followed, meaning that Abingdon went through 3-0 on
penalties!
The team also reached the SRWFL Chairman’s Cup Final but on this occasion they were
on the wrong end of a penalty shootout, going down to Woking after the game had finished
level at 2-2.
Abingdon United are managed by Daniel Knight and Nell Boxall is captain, whilst
leading goalscorer is Lindsay Pinker, who scored 15 times in 21 appearances.
Everyone has played a huge part on and off the field this season to get the club its
promotion to the National League for the first time, it is really hard to narrow it down to just
one or two players as everyone deserves the credit for this amazing season!
