Cardiff stage Cup fightback
Cardiff City Women overturned a two-goal deficit against The New Saints to book their
place in the quarter finals of the FAW Welsh Women’s Cup.
A five-goal thriller at Park Hall saw Courtney Ashworth and Lexie Harrison put the home
side ahead in the first half after Lisa Owen was dismissed for the visitors.
Zoe Atkins then reduced the deficit eight minutes before the half-time interval before
Megan Saunders kept up her goalscoring form to draw the Bluebirds level.
Catherine Walsh had the opportunity to complete the turnaround from the penalty spot
but saw her effort kept out from 12 yards, but she finally found the back of the net five minutes
from time to seal the win for Ian Darbyshire’s side.
There was late drama at Cae Seilo in the all-Adran Genero North tie between leaders
Bethel Ladies and Connah’s Quay Nomads.
Chelsea Bloor opened the scoring early on for the Nomads but saw her strike cancelled
out by Mari Gibbard midway through the first half.
The Nomads then looked to have won it in stoppage time as Kirstie Kural restored their
lead, but Fflur Williams responded for the second time for Bethel with a last-gasp equaliser to
force penalties, where Bethel came out on top from 12 yards as they secured their place in the
last eight.
Penalties were also required between Briton Ferry Llansawel and Pontypridd
Town after the pair played out a goalless draw at Old Road Welfare Ground. It was the away
side who edged it on spot kicks to make their way into the quarter finals.
Genero Adran South leaders Abergavenny Women meanwhile pulled off a cup upset
by toppling Genero Adran Premier side Port Talbot Town 3-0.
Kate Jeremiah and Lyndsey Davies both struck in the first half to put the home side in
control at Pen-Y-Pound Stadium, before Caitlin Davies added another after the interval.
Genero Adran North side CPD Pwllheli also booked their place in the next round with
a 1-0 win over Rhyl Ladies. Leanne Rees Williams’ goal on the half-hour mark proved to be
the difference between the two sides.
Holders Cardiff Met Women were comfortable winners over Cascade Youth Club,
with Ellie Preece firing in a first-half brace to help the Archers take a step closer to replicating
their heroics in the 2018-19 competition.
Fellow Genero Adran Premier outfit Barry Town Utd secured their passage into the
next round with a 4-0 win over Swansea University at Jenner Park.
Jennifer Trivett scored a brace either side of Mackenzie Olden’s strike, before Manon
Pearce netted a fourth with 20 minutes left on the clock.
A convincing win for Swansea City also saw them earn their place in the last eight as
they scored six unanswered goals against Cardiff Wanderers at Tongwynlais Playing
Fields.
Alicia Powe was dismissed for the Swans in the opening ten minutes but the home side
failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
Alisha Northmore-Benson then diverted the ball into her own net to put Chris Church’s
side ahead before they added further goals through five different scorers. Chloe Chivers, Ria
Hughes, Tija Richardson , Stacey John-Davis and Nia Rees all got on the scoresheet for the
Swans.
