All’s Well that ends well for the Foxes
Brislington 5 Longwell Green Sports 1
19 March 2023
A er four away games on the bounce the Foxes were back at Ironmould Lane for
their first encounter of the season with mid table Longwell Green.
‘The Green’ were unbeaten in 3 games, but with the fourth worst away goals
record, 43 conceded from 17 games, it was going to be a tough ask against the
league leaders who had scored 48 from 17 home starts.
A er the midweek efforts to consolidate top spot (and a radio Bristol interview for
the gaffer) the Foxes manager Lee Perks made changes in a empt to keep legs
fresh. George Jones (who’d scored 7 goals in two games), Jordan Ricke s and
Harry Tobin made way for his holiness the reverend Dean Griffiths, Josh Egan and
Jack Allward. Danny Doddimead who was due to start pulled out through illness.
Thankfully for a spectator the weather was improved and the pitch looked invi ng
in the sun, hopefully the football would match the condi ons!
Unfortunately the start confirmed what the relentless run of games had suggested
and what the Bris management were trying to avoid as the 19 game unbeaten run
con nues. The players looked lethargic and lacked the Zip that we’ve been used to
seeing. Despite that there was an early chance for Bris as Griffiths worked a great
cross to the far post unfortunately the unmarked Scadding, couldn’t capitalise on
the free header.
However Longwell couldn’t make the most on any early stu ering’s from the
home side. The scrappy early stages were edged by Brislington who were s ll the
more posi ve side. An interes ng ba le was ensuing between Green
centre half Alex Grimshaw & Dean Griffiths and Buck was s ll working relentlessly
however on the le side it was clear that McLennan wasn’t firing on all cylinders.
On 12 minutes it was Mclennan who won the foxes their first corner. A good
delivery from Egan to the centre of the six yard box was turned in by Asa Whites
le foot volley. 1-0 Brislington
Immediately Mclennan was removed, a calf problem pu ng pay to his a ernoon,
he was replaced by George Jones.
S ll 1 minute later it was nearly 2. A Griffiths break away and cross from the right
found Buck, unfortunately he couldn’t quite connect with his le .
This did li le to up the tempo from the hosts who s ll were making hard work of
most situa ons, the performance lacked any fluency and too many individuals
looked flat.
There were some excep ons, Barwood was dependable as ever, Allward looked at
ease in every situa on, Egan was influen al with his passing and Griffiths was
leading the line well.
In the 21st minute an Egan free kick was deflected off the wall, and from the
resul ng Egan corner Dean Griffiths header changed the flight of the ball enough
to deflect it in via the keeper. 2-0 Brislington.
Eight minutes later it was 3. A quick throw in from Asa White set Griffiths off on
the right. S ll with a lot to do he looked in an unstoppable mood as he flicked the
ball over Masons head, turning back into the box and holding off both Mason and
