Chelsea were crowned as Champions for the fourth year in a row after they
defeated Reading FC Women 3-0 on Sunday. The Blues required a
victory to make sure and any nerves were calmed when Sam Kerr headed
them into a first half lead, which was doubled just before half time by Guro
Reiten. Kerr wrapped up the win with her second late on but on the other
side of the coin, Reading’s eight-year stay in the top flight has come to an
end as they will finish bottom of the table.
Manchester Utd did all they could but despite their eighteenth
league win of the season, 1-0 at Liverpool, they have to settle for second place. Lucia Garcia
scored the only goal during the second half and United can look back on their best season to
date, including their highest ever finish and best run in the FA Cup.
Arsenal take the third Champions League slot although their season finished on a losing
note, 2-0 at home to Aston Villa. Goals either side of half time from Rachel Daly - her 22nd of
the season - and Alisha Lehmann gave Villa an impressive end to what has been a fine season
for them.
Manchester City just miss out on the top three on goal difference following their 3-2
victory over Everton. Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw scored twice, taking her to the 20-goal mark in the
campaign, and Lauren Hemp added the other as City raced into a three-goal lead before
Everton caused a scare with goals in the last ten minutes from Lucy Hope and Leonie Maier.
Leicester City will be playing WSL football against next season and finish outside of the
bottom two after winning 1-0 away to Brighton & Hove Albion. The Foxes completed their
escape following Willie Kirk’s arrival as manager, after losing each of their opening nine games
and being pointless at Christmas. Ava Baker, fresh
