WSS: The division you are playing in has looked to be a strong one this season,
has the standard improved?
VB: Honestly, I believe that Division One North is the strongest and most competitive out of all
of the divisions at Tier 4. The standard of clubs and teams is getting stronger every season and
it’s massive credit to not only the players but to the managers, coaches and all those behind the
scenes as well.
WSS: Are there any people, on and off the pitch, who have made a big
contribution without getting a lot of recognition?
VB: We’re a really small club if you look at the clubs in Division One North. As a result, we also
run with a really small team of volunteers, meaning that lots of people have more than one
role! Special mention must go to Kelly and Dave first and foremost. Anyone who has been to
Norton will know Kelly and Dave; they help wash the kits, they run the cafe, they ensure that
the away side and match officials have everything they need and they also travel to the away
games to support the team. Our manager Chris, who not only runs the women’s team but also
runs the Under 12s girls, and our reserve team manager Matty, who also runs the Under 11s
girls, runs the social media, organises the kits, stocks up the cafe and so much more!
WSS: What would you say has been the best result or most memorable game
during the season?
VB: I think Middlesbrough at home was a really important result for us. We won 3-1 in a game
where we played some really good stuff and created a lot of chances, but the most pleasing
thing that might was the girls’ attitude and desire; we were absolutely relentless, and to win a
derby on your home pitch under the floodlights is always nice. That result seemed to kick start
our season, in the five games since then, we’ve won four and only lost to title favourites
Newcastle United.
WSS: Are you confident that the team can build on this campaign and do even
better next season?
VB: Our aim is always to do better than the previous season; I think we’ve learnt and grown
a lot as a team this season, so I’m confident that next season we can kick on again and push
that little bit higher up the division.
