FC United of Manchester were one of two Regional League clubs to
knock out National League opponents in the Third Round Qualifying
when they beat Chorley 2-1.
The North West League side needed to come
from behind after Chorley took the lead through Sophie
Flynn just before the hour mark, but FC United hit back
with Jordon Bailey and Kirsty Chambers scoring in
quick succession to earn a win which takes them
through to the First Round Proper for the first time in
their history.
This was matched by AFC Bournemouth
who won 3-1 against Buckland Athletic. Molly Clark
was the heroine for the Cherries as she scored a hat-
trick whilst the Bucks replied with a Sarah Stacey
penalty (see match report).
Both teams have been rewarded with home
ties; FC United will await the winners of the postponed
tie between Fleetwood Town Wrens and Natalie Watson clears away for Barnsley, challenged
Liverpool Feds, whilst AFC Bournemouth host by Molly Harvard of Leeds Utd (Julian Barker).
Southampton FC, who progressed past Ilminster
Town with a 4-0 victory. The South West League outfit gave a good account of themselves on the day
but after Phoebe Williams had given the Saints a first half lead, an Alisha Ware goal on the stroke of
half time proved to be a hammer blow to the Somerset side. Ware completed her double midway
through the second half, before Ella Pusey rounded off the scoring.
Chester-le-Street Town continue to have a good season and they went through with a
3-2 local derby victory against Durham Cestria. Jordan Atkinson gave Durham an early lead but
three goals in a six minute spell after the break, two from Nicole Havery and Sarah Burn adding the
other, were enough to give the Cestrians the win despite Rebecca Henderson pulling a goal back late
on.
Chester-le-Street must now host Brighouse Town in what is sure to be one of the ties of
the First Round. Brighouse ended the hopes of Merseyrail Ladies by beating them 3-0, courtesy
of a goal apiece from Emma Dobson, Rebecca Gompertz and Amy Woodruff.
Newcastle Utd faced an awkward tie at home to Sunderland West End, who were
fresh from a surprise victory over Bradford City in the previous round. In the end, the hosts made
sure there were no shocks on this occasion, running out 4-1 winners thanks to a Rhiannon Gray
brace, Katie Barker and Georgia Gibson.
Next up for Newcastle will be Barnsley, who produced one of their best results of the
season so far by beating Leeds Utd 4-1. Kathryn Smith and Lindsey Tugby put Barnsley two ahead
inside the opening twelve minutes and after Laura Bartutp had renewed hopes for Leeds by pulling
one back just before half time, second half goals from Darcie Greene and Courtney Csomor saw
Barnsley to victory.
Wolverhampton Wanderers were given a tough tie by Long Eaton Utd before
emerging as 1-0 winners. Wolves have been averaging over six goals per game in the league so far this
season but a goal early in the second half from Jade Cross was just enough to take them through.
Wolves now have an intriguing tie against ambitious West Midlands League Division One
South side Stourbridge who won 3-0 against Crusaders. Ruby Meeson put the Glassgirls in front
during the first half and after having to soak up Crusaders pressure after the break, sealed the win
with further goals late on from Amber Lawrence and Courteney Murphy. Stourbridge are now
(playing level wise) the lowest ranked team left in the competition.
Lincoln City progressed with a 2-0 victory away to Holwell Sports. Leah Hardy sealed
the win for the Lady Imps with a goal in each half, earning themselves a home tie with Solihull
Moors whose good season is showing no signs of slowing.
Moors made it through by winning 3-0 against Sporting Khalsa in another all-Midlands
Division clash, Lois Jefferies giving them an early lead before going on to score a hat-trick on the day.
