A warm welcome to you all and to the players, management, directors and
supporters from Tiverton Town who have made the ‘relatively’ short trip up
the M5 to visit the South West Interiors Stadium this evening. We hope you
enjoy your visit, and trust everyone has a safe trip home this evening. We
would also like to show our appreciation to you all for support and patience
as we implement the COVID19 control measures. You were good last week
and we hope you will continue to follow the guidance. We all want to watch
football and the spectators make the occasion. Even when watching
televised games with the ‘simulated’ crowd you can sense the lack of
atmosphere. Hopefully the stricter measures being imposed by the
government will contain the virus and prevent further loss and suffering,
that must be the priority. If we can do our bit to help and keep the South
West Interiors Stadium a safe and secure venue, the reward is being able
to enjoy the sort of match we experienced last week.
We start today’s match on the back of another solid away point in the
League. Last Wednesday evening we travelled to Farnborough and despite
the rain and motorway closures dug in and secured a goalless and dogged
draw, but with a few moments of brilliance. Both teams had chances to
score and snatch the points and Olly Mehew very nearly did in added time
were it not for the fingertips of the Farnborough keeper. Olly also linked up
well with Jordan Williams on a couple of occasions and the Farnborough
keeper did well to keep out the winger’s long range efforts, one save
scrambled into his arms at the second attempt – did it cross the line, we will
never know Stuart Fleetwood also tested the keeper from range but again
a finger nail managed to nudge it over the bar. Behind our defence Andy
Hannah also pulled off his fair share of outstanding and spectacular saves
to secure a very well earned clean sheet. Unfortunately an early booking for
Nick Rhodes had repercussions late in the game when he mistimed a tackle
to earn his second caution of the night and an early bath. There was
nothing malicious in his play and we all felt for him. To the credit of the
squad the ten men left on the pitch were secure in defence for the
remaining 7+ minutes and as mentioned above, nearly stole victory.
Off the field this week has focussed on securing player sponsorships and
you will see later in the programme that once again the Bluebells
community has been generous in its support for the squad. There are still
a few players available to sponsor so please get in touch with Mark Thorne
if you are interested.
Next Saturday we make the lengthy excursion to Truro where we hope the
weather, the pitch, traffic and anything else that can affect the game go in
our favour. For those that travelled last season who can forget the 2.30 pm
