Brighouse Town produced one of the best results of the
First Round in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup when they
won 3-0 away to FAWNL Division One North leaders
Chester-le-Street Town.
Brighouse defender Emma Dobson told us she
felt it was a deserved win and was looking forward to
facing Newcastle Utd in the next round, as well as
hoping to kick start their league campaign when it gets
going again:
WSS: Congratulations on an excellent win on
Sunday, just how well did the team play to
achieve that result?
ED: Thank you! I believe we definitely deserved the
win. We played very well. The link up play in the
middle and in the final third was exceptional. Our Photo - Ray Spencer
first half performance got us the goals but the second half was disciplined
and we saw the game out in awful weather conditions.
WSS: Chester-le-Street have had a very good season so far and top the league
table, but did you always feel confident of winning going into the game?
ED: We know Chester-le-Street are a strong squad. We've played against them many times
now and it's always been a good game. Our preparation at training was great, we knew if
we took what we had done in the week into the game, we had a very good chance of getting
the win.
WSS: Could you have envisaged the start you made to the game though?
ED: Given the weather conditions and the long journey, the start we had was very
impressive. Chester-le-Street came out with a high press and put us under a bit of pressure
but we adapted well, recognised we needed to make a few small changes and it went from
there. Watching the attacking players pull it all together was fantastic. Getting the early
goals definitely put us at ease and we controlled the game from then on in.
WSS: Were there any scares for you in the second half or were you always
comfortable at three goals up?
ED: Chester-le-Street changed their formation at half time, which did put a bit of pressure
on us but we all managed the game well. I thought Ellie Dobson had a great game this week.
She protected myself and Shauna really well, I felt really comfortable and had confidence
that everything in front of us was going to be dealt with. We would have been very
disappointed if we were to throw away three goals.
WSS: The draw for the Second Round has paired you with another north east
side but this time at home, what are your thoughts on facing Newcastle?
ED: Again, Newcastle are a strong team, like ourselves they have a lot of strength and
depth. We won't underestimate them but we love an FA Cup run at Brighouse, so we will
prepare well and go out there for the win.
WSS: How big a priority is an FA Cup run in your season overall?
ED: The FA Cup is important for every club at our level. We are not afraid to say it helps
fund the season, so a good run is essential. Other than the prize money, the competition is
