Arsenal’s impressive start to the new season gathered further momentum
with a 5-0 victory over Manchester City. Vivianne Miedema gave them
an early lead and Kim Little fired home the second, midway through the
half. Katie McCabe made it three with a powerful finish on the hour and
after Little had increased their lead from the penalty spot, Leah Williamson
rounded off a great night for her side with the final goal in injury time.
Tottenham Hotspur had spent a couple of hours on top of the
table, for the first time in their history, following a 1-0 win against
Reading FC Women. Both sides had opportunities during the game but
with five minutes remaining, Jessica Naz scored the only goal of the game
to hand Spurs a third successive win and condemn Reading to another narrow loss.
Aston Villa continue to impress in the early stages and complete the top three after
winning 1-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion. The Seagulls had started the day on top of the table
but a tight game was settled just after half time when Emily Gielnik scored the only goal of the
game, the first time that Brighton have conceded this season.
Chelsea follow on in fourth as they ran out 6-1 winners away to Manchester Utd.
Fran Kirby gave the Blues a flying start with a second minute goal and after Pernille Harder
scored a fine solo effort, Sam Kerr made it three before half time. Alessia Russo pulled one back
for United against her former club but Kerr netted her second three minutes later and Chelsea
went on to crown the win late on with further strikes from Drew Spence and Jessie Fleming.
West Ham Utd notched up their win in some style, beating Leicester City 4-0.
Tameka Yallop marked her debut for the
Hammers by giving them the lead and Claudia Everton 3 (Maier 13, Bennison 73, Sevecke 90)
