The league took a break from action over the weekend, with the quarter finals of the Sky Sports
Cup taking centre stage.
Holders and SWPL leaders Celtic were the high profile victims of the round, beaten on a
penalty shootout by Spartans after the teams had battled out a 1-1 draw. It looked to be business
as usual when Clarissa Larisey gave Celtic the lead after twelve minutes and despite suffering the
sending off of Jacynta Galabadaarachchi just before half time, Fran Alonso’s side looked to have
done enough to reach the semi finals until deep into injury time, when Louise Mason grabbed an
equaliser - the first goal that Celtic have conceded this season. Extra time could not provide a
winner, sending the match into penalties where Rachel Harrison saved the first kick from Lisa
Robertson and after Tegan Bowie later shot over, it was left to Robyn McCafferty to tuck home
the winning penalty and send the former winners into the last four.
Rangers eased into the semi finals as they ran out 5-0 winners over Motherwell. The
reigning Champions led at half time through a goal from Emma Watson but they took a firm grip
on the game early in the second half, through strikes in quick succession from Lisa Martinez and
Kirsty Howat. Both Howat and Martinez went on to complete their doubles before the end of the
game as Rangers moved to within one match of reaching the Final for the first time.
Glasgow City were the highest scorers on they day with a nine-goal blast in their local
derby tie against Glasgow Women. Emily Whelan gave City an early lead which was doubled
from the penalty spot by Lauren Davidson and Jenna Clark headed in a third ahead of half time.
Sarah Gibb extended their lead on the hour, before Davidson, Gibb and Clark all scored a second
goal apiece. Sophia Martin netted her first goal goal for her club and central defender Clark
rounded off the scoring with her hat-trick goal, to help take City closer to a third successive
appearance in the Final.
