League Review
It’s as you were at the top of the Pitching In Southern League Division
One South following Saturday’s round of matches.
The only change in the top five saw Bashley and Tavistock AFC swap
places after the Devonians won 1-0 at The GlenMex Stadium, thus taking
fifth spot, courtesy of a goal on the hour-mark from Josh Grant in front of
a crowd of 371.
Leaders Sholing edged out Frome Town by the odd goal in five at
Badgers Hill with 357 in attendance. However, the hosts will be kicking
themselves for throwing away a 2-0 lead given to them with goals from Jon
Davies after just 5 minutes and Joe O’Loughlin in the 23rd minute. But, no
doubt after some stern words at half-time, the Boatmen came out for the
second half all guns blazing and pulled one back just 4 minutes after the
restart through Brad Targett. Lee Wort then equalised on the hour-mark
and 6 minutes later, Wort grabbed his brace to put the visitors ahead – a
lead they held on to.
Sholing remain three points clear of second-placed neighbours AFC
Totton, who have four games in hand. And the Stags achieved win number
21 from their 28 league games against bottom-markers Slimbridge, who
look doomed but really gave their high-flying visitors a game at Thornhill
Park. In the end, thanks to dogged defending and great effort all around
the pitch, AFC Totton won it through Scott Rendell’s first-minute header.
The remainder of the top five are playing for finishing positions for the play-
offs as third-placed Hamworthy United trail second place by eight points.
And then Hammers remain in third spot after edging Westbury United by
the odd goal in five at the Sunseeker International County Ground. But, like
Frome against Sholing, the visitors will be disappointed to have thrown
away a 2-0 lead given to them by Harvey Flippance after 14 minutes and
Gary Higdon on 42 minutes. Curtis Young reduced the deficit right on half-
time with a penalty. However, it wasn’t until the 83rd minute that Remus
Nixon grabbed the home side’s equaliser and the 89th minute saw Cameron
Munn win it for the Hammers.
Wimborne Town returned to winning ways, beating Willand Rovers 2-1
at New Cuthbury to remain in fourth place. The crowd of 455 had to wait
