Arsenal have gone back to the top of the Barclays WSL, heading into the
international break, after they ran out 4-0 winners over Leicester City.
New Leicester manager Willie Kirk had been handed the toughest
possible start against the Gunners and he found his team two goals down
inside the opening quarter of the game. Frida Maanum and Caitlin Foord
both found the net for Arsenal and Steph Catley added a third ahead of the
break. Stina Blackstenius wrapped up the win with the fourth goal, early in
the second half.
This meant that Arsenal were likely to at least head the table on goal
difference as Manchester Utd and Chelsea, the two teams who started the day level on points
with them, met each other on Sunday evening. The first half was goalless but a five minute spell
just after the hour turned the match Chelsea’s way as Sam Kerr and Lauren James put them two
goals ahead - the first league goals that United have conceded this season. Alessia Russo gave
United hope as she pulled a goal back but Erin Cuthbert sealed the points, and a sixth straight
victory for Chelsea, deep into injury time.
Manchester City meanwhile made it four victories on the trot with a 3-0 success away
to Reading FC Women. The Cityzens went two goals ahead, early in the second half, in
somewhat bizarre circumstances as both were own goals from Emma Mukandi. Khadija Shaw
rounded off the scoring with her seventh goal of the season to ensure her side continue to keep
themselves in touch with the top three.
Tottenham Hotspur remain in fifth place even though their match against Everton
fell victim to the weather, and the two teams have been joined on nine points by Aston Villa
after they won 1-0 at Liverpool. Rachel Daly Leicester City 0
scored the only goal of the game, from the penalty Arsenal 4 (Maanum 13, Foord 22, Catley 37,
spot, just before the hour as Villa brought an end to Blackstenius 48)

day in which all five matches resulted in away wins.
