With Barclays FA WSL leaders Chelsea not in action on Sunday,
Manchester City took the opportunity to close the gap on them to
two points by winning 4-0 against Birmingham City at St George's
Park, taking their winning sequence in the league to eight matches.
Manchester City opened the scoring five minutes before half
time, when Sam Mewis headed in a cross from Chloe Kelly. The USA
international then netted her second early in the second half, firing
home during a scramble following a corner. Moments later, the
Cityzens were three goals ahead as a left wing cross by Lauren Hemp
drifted inside the far post and Caroline Weir rounded off the scoring when she slotted
home a low centre from Ellen White.
Arsenal meanwhile got back to winning ways with a 4-0 success away to
Aston Villa, all four goals coming in the second half. The Gunners pressed hard in the
first half but were unable to break through, going closest when a Vivianne Miedema
header was cleared off the line, but the Dutch striker was to open the scoring just before
the hour mark, converting a Beth Mead cross from close range. Jordan Nobbs
increased Arsenal's lead at the midpoint of the half, following up to score after
Miedema's shot had been saved, and Katie McCabe powered home a long range strike
to put the Gunners further ahead. McCabe then turned provider for the final goal two
minutes from time, her cross being headed in by Lisa Evans.
Everton meanwhile consolidated themselves in fifth place, thanks to a 3-2
win away to Tottenham Hotspur. The Toffees took a sixth minute lead when Valerie
Gauvin slotted home from the penalty spot after Kerys Harrop had been penalised for
handball, and the striker then scored a second spot kick shortly afterwards following a
foul by Alanna Kennedy. Angela Addison gave Spurs renewed hope when she finished
off from Kit Graham's through ball just before
the break and Gemma Davison then levelled Aston Villa 0
the scores when a typical driving run ended Arsenal 4 (Miedema 58, Nobbs 67, McCabe 73,
Evans 88)
with her finding the far corner from the edge -
of the area. Everton's response was swift and Birmingham City 0
