Chelsea continue to stretch the pace at the top of the table and also
greatly boosted their goal difference with an 8-0 victory over Leicester
City.
Jessie Fleming and Fran Kirby each scored twice, with Guro Reiten,
Niamh Charles, Sam Kerr and Beth England also getting on the
scoresheet as Emma Hayes’ side ran up an eighth straight victory, which
preserves their lead of three points over their nearest rivals.
Manchester Utd now occupy second place on goal difference after
they defeated Aston Villa 5-0 at Old Trafford. Katie Zelem and Leah Galton put United two
goals ahead at half time in front of an attendance of 30,196 and they went on to crown the
win with further goals after the break from Alessia Russo, Ona Batlle and Rachel Williams.
United’s five-goal margin of victory means that Arsenal have slipped back a place to
third but remain firmly in the running following their 1-0 win against Everton. Vivianne
Miedema scored the only goal of the game, midway through the first half, to steer the
Gunners back to winning ways.
It’s now six wins on the trot for Manchester City as they continue their pursuit after
the top three. The damage was done inside the opening 26 minutes as a Veatriki Sarri own
goal ut them in front, before Julie Blakstad and Laura Coombs put the seal on a 3-1 victory
over Brighton & Hove Albion, who grabbed an injury time consolation through Lee
Geum-min.
