Match Report
16th October 2021 at Lancer Scott Stadium, Backwell.
ASHTON & BACKWELL UTD. FC 1 [Skidmore 22m]
STREET FC 2 [Foster 44m & 52m ]
On a bright and sunny October afternoon the Stags started in much the same
vein, they were organised and energetic, in stark contrast to the visitors. In the
first twenty minutes they pressed hard, Radnedge picked up a poor back pass,
rounded the keeper, but could not quite get the angle to shoot, Skidmore’s thirty
yard shot was saved at the near post and the same player beat Phillips’ deliberate
foul to run from his own half, only to hit the side netting with his effort. Finally a
goal came on 22 minutes when Invernizzi, who had tormented the Street defence
throughout, passed from the left corner to Skidmore whose shot from the edge
of the box was deflected by Hartley into the top left corner. And the supplier was
unlucky not to double the score when his shot from the right beat Wilkinson all
ends up, only to find the cross bar.
Indeed such was the Stags dominance that Street had to wait till 33 minutes had
gone to even get a shot in, when Foster turned Hebblethwaite on the edge of the
box, with his shot beating Coombes but going narrowly wide. So it was very
much against the run of play that the visitors equalised on the stroke of half time,
Lovibond outpaced Jordan Bishop, he took the ball into the box, passed to Foster
to beat Coombes, half time 1-1.
Into the second half and it was Street who had a lot more energy and speed,
though the more open nature of the game almost let Saunders, Radnedge and
Invernizzi combine, only for the final product to be narrowly wide on 48 minutes.
However the action was now more at the other end and seven minutes after the
break Foster took the ball down the right touchline, outpaced the defence, beat
Coombes and lobbed into the far corner of the net for what proved the final goal.
Hebblethwaite, Connor and Charlie Saunders all had chances, the latter headed
wide when very well placed, from a corner in the 99 minute, while for the
th
visitors Sheppard and Strange both should have done better with opportunities
given. Overall Stags made Street seem better than they really were with too
many misplaced passes which made for disjointed play and put themselves under
unnecessary pressure, so they were first in the first half, but very much second
best in second.
FA Vase Cup action in the next round awaits on 26 with Bemerton Heath
th
Harlequins the visitors.
